CMCs – a high-performance class of materials

Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are a new high performance material class designed to meet the challenges of the toughest operating conditions. Ceramic Matrix Composites offer solutions where other materials fail.

They enable design solutions from simple to highly complex structures, and offering solutions for applications in high temperatures up to 1400 °C, aggressive chemical media as well as high mechanical stresses where reliability and a long lifetime are required.

Ceramic Matrix Composites weigh less than Aluminum Alloys and much less than Steel Alloys, so that they offer a solution to weight-sensitive aggressive application areas. Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are commonly based on Carbon Fibers or on SiC-Fibers – thus covering a broad range of specific high performance properties allowing specific solutions for most highly demanding applications.

Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are characterized by:

  • a very low expansion at high temperatures of above 1000 °C,
  • a high resistance to
    • abrasion
    • corrosion and
    • thermo-shocks
  • light-weight with only 2,3 – 2,5 g/cm³ vs. Al with 2,7 g/cm³ or Steel with ~8 g/cm³
  • excellent tensile, shear and bending strength
  • high ductility
